GPS trackers and microchips do different jobs

This is the most useful thing to understand before buying any tracker.

A microchip is a permanent implant with no battery and no location function. It identifies your animal when someone scans it at a vet or a shelter. It cannot be removed, cannot run out, and is what actually reunites most lost pets. It is also worthless if the registry details are out of date, which is extremely common — check yours today.

A GPS tracker tells you where the animal is right now. It is a live search tool, and it fails exactly when its battery dies or its collar comes off.

They are complements, not alternatives. A tracker is an excellent addition to a microchipped, tagged animal and a poor substitute for one.

How the location actually works

A GPS collar uses satellites to fix a position and a cellular connection to send it to your phone. That has two consequences people discover at the worst moment.

Coverage. No cellular signal means no live updates. Rural areas, valleys, dense woodland and underground spaces are exactly where a dog gets lost and exactly where coverage is worst. Check the carrier's coverage for the places you actually walk before you commit.

Battery. Long battery figures are quoted for normal use, where the collar sits on your home Wi-Fi most of the day and only wakes periodically. Live tracking mode — the mode you need when the dog is missing — drains it far faster, often to hours. A tracker with a flat battery is a plain collar.

Charge it on a schedule rather than waiting for a low-battery alert.

What escape alerts are worth

A geofence alert when the dog leaves the garden is the feature that justifies a tracker for most owners. Minutes matter with a loose dog, and knowing immediately rather than at dinnertime genuinely changes outcomes.

Two practical notes. GPS accuracy is a matter of metres, so a geofence drawn tightly around a small garden will produce false alerts as the fix drifts — draw it generously. And an alert is only as good as your phone: check notifications are allowed and not silenced overnight.

Activity monitoring, and how to use it properly

Step counts and activity goals are pleasant and mostly cosmetic — comparing your dog's steps to other dogs of its breed is entertainment.

The genuinely useful signal is change over time in your own dog. A dog whose daily activity has quietly dropped by a third over a month is telling you something, and gradual decline is precisely what owners fail to notice. Reduced activity is an early sign of arthritis, pain and a range of illnesses.

Look at your dog's trend, not the leaderboard.

Fit, collar safety and the escape problem

Cellular trackers require a plan because they use a mobile network. The device is not usable without one, and the ongoing cost typically exceeds the hardware over a couple of years.

Who should look elsewhere

If your dog never leaves a secure garden and walks on lead, a tracker is buying against a risk you may not have. If your area has poor cellular coverage, check it honestly before spending. And whatever you decide, make sure the microchip registry details are current — that is free and it is what actually gets most lost pets home.
