Why crested geckos are unusual among reptiles
Most pet lizards eat insects, and keeping them means keeping feeder insects alive in your house. Crested geckos are the exception: they are frugivorous omnivores, and a well-formulated complete meal replacement powder can be their entire diet.
That is genuinely unusual and it is why crested geckos became one of the most beginner-friendly reptiles available. You mix a powder with water, put it in a dish, and the animal's nutrition is covered.
The mixture is typically around two parts water to one part powder, to the consistency of a thick fruit purée. Mix it fresh.
Feeding routine
Rotate flavours if your gecko is fussy. A gecko that refuses one variety often takes another, and rotation also spreads any single-formula limitation.
Insects: not required, but worth offering
A complete MRP genuinely covers nutrition. Many keepers still offer appropriately sized insects — dubia roaches, crickets, black soldier fly larvae — once a week or so, for enrichment and behavioural interest rather than necessity.

Husbandry that matters more than diet
Crested geckos are forgiving, which means husbandry mistakes are survivable rather than absent.
Temperature is the one to get right, and the mistake is usually the opposite of what people expect. Crested geckos are a cool-temperature species and heat stress is a real and common cause of death in captivity. They do well at ordinary room temperatures in most homes and often need no supplemental heat at all. If your room is warm, that is a problem to solve, not a feature.
Measure with a digital probe, and if you do use any heat source, never run it without a thermostat.
Humidity should cycle rather than sit constant — higher at night after misting, drying out during the day. Constant saturation causes respiratory problems and grows mould; constant dryness causes stuck sheds, and retained shed around toes and the tail tip constricts and causes tissue loss.
Height over floor space. They are arboreal. Vertical space, branches, cork bark and foliage matter more than floor area.
Calcium sacs. Check the small sacs on either side of the roof of the mouth periodically — they indicate calcium status, and a vet or an experienced keeper can show you what to look for.
Tails do not grow back. Unlike many geckos, a crested gecko that drops its tail never regrows it. It is cosmetic rather than harmful, but it is permanent, so handle calmly and avoid grabbing the tail.
Storage of the powder
Keep it sealed, cool and dry. Vitamins degrade with heat, light and humidity, and a tub that has been open in a warm room for a year is not delivering what the label states.
Buy a tub size you will use within a few months, and write the opening date on it.
Who should look elsewhere
If you keep an insectivorous species, this is not their food. If your gecko is refusing food, losing weight, or has a kinked jaw, tremors or a rubbery feel, see a reptile vet — those point at metabolic bone disease or another problem rather than a flavour preference. And if your room runs warm, fix the temperature before anything else.
