Casper Dog Bed, Medium: In-Depth Research

What a memory foam dog bed is actually for
Most dog beds are a cushion. A foam bed is a support product, and the distinction matters for exactly two groups of dogs: heavy dogs whose joints carry real load, and older or arthritic dogs whose comfort on hard surfaces has measurably declined.
For a young, light dog with no joint issues, a plain bolster bed is fine and a foam bed is a comfort upgrade rather than a health one. For a large-breed senior, a supportive foam base is the difference between sleeping through the night and shifting position every twenty minutes.
Support versus sink
The failure mode of cheap "memory foam" dog beds is that they are a thin layer of memory foam on top of loose polyfill, or shredded foam in a bag. Both bottom out: the dog's hips compress the fill until they are resting on the floor through a few centimetres of fabric. That is worse than no bed, because the dog is now lying on a surface that traps heat while providing no support.
What you want is a dense support base with a pressure-relieving layer on top. The Casper bed is built as a foam construction with a supportive base and bolstered edges rather than a fill bag, which is the right architecture. When you are comparing any foam dog bed, press hard in the middle with your fist — if you reach the floor, the dog will too.
Bolsters are not decoration
Dogs are overwhelmingly curled or head-propped sleepers. A raised edge gives them somewhere to rest their head and a sense of an enclosed edge at their back, and dogs with a bolster typically settle faster than dogs on a flat mat.
The exception is the dog that sprawls flat on its side. If yours sleeps stretched out, bolsters reduce the usable surface, and a flat mattress-style bed of the same footprint gives more room.
Sizing, which is where most people go wrong
Buy for the dog's sleeping position, not its standing length. Measure the dog stretched out on its side, nose to tail base, and add roughly 15–20 cm. Then check that measurement against the bed's internal dimensions, not its external ones — bolsters eat several centimetres on every side, and a medium bed's usable area is meaningfully smaller than its footprint.
If your dog is between sizes, size up. A dog that has to curl to fit will use the bed, but a dog that wants to stretch and cannot will end up on the floor beside it.
Washing and the part people miss
The cover is removable and machine washable, which is the correct design and the main reason to prefer a covered foam bed over a sewn-shut one.
The foam core is not washable. If your dog has an accident that soaks through, the foam takes days to dry properly and can hold odour permanently. Two habits prevent it:
The expansion period is real
Compressed foam ships rolled and takes time to reach full loft — typically a day or two, longer in a cold room. A bed that feels thin on day one is usually not defective; it is still expanding. Unroll it somewhere warm and leave it before judging.
Who should look elsewhere
If your dog is a chewer, buy something cheap and replaceable until that phase passes; a destroyed foam bed is both expensive and a genuine ingestion risk. If your dog runs hot or you live somewhere warm, foam traps heat and an elevated mesh cot bed will be more comfortable. And if the dog is a sprawler rather than a curler, a flat mattress of the same footprint gives more usable space for the money.
Casper Dog Bed, Medium: Common Questions
How do I choose the right dog bed size?
Measure your dog lying stretched on its side from nose to the base of the tail and add about 15–20 cm. Then compare that with the bed's internal sleeping area, not its external footprint — bolsters take several centimetres off each side. If you are between sizes, go up.
Is memory foam worth it for a dog?
For heavy dogs and for older or arthritic dogs, yes — a dense supportive base genuinely reduces pressure on joints. For a young, light dog with no joint problems it is a comfort upgrade rather than a health one, and a good bolster bed does the job.
Can I wash the whole bed?
Only the cover. Wash it cool and air dry — hot washes and tumble drying shrink covers so they will not refit. The foam core is not washable, so add a waterproof liner under the cover if your dog is a puppy, a senior, or prone to accidents.
The bed arrived thin and flat. Is it faulty?
Usually not. Compressed foam ships rolled and needs a day or two to reach full loft, longer in a cold room. Unroll it somewhere warm and give it time before judging the thickness.
Will it survive a chewer?
No foam bed will. A dog that opens the cover can swallow foam, which is a real obstruction risk. Use a cheap, replaceable bed until the chewing phase passes, then buy the supportive one.
