Catit Flower Cat Water Fountain: In-Depth Research
Editorial analysis by the FurReviews team, based on manufacturer specifications, published guidance and reported owner experience. We have not tested this product ourselves.
Why a fountain instead of a bowl
Cats descend from desert animals and have a weak thirst drive. On wet food that matters little, because the food carries the water. On dry food it matters a lot, and low water intake is part of the picture in feline lower urinary tract disease and in the kidney problems that show up in older cats.
A fountain does not make a cat drink. It removes the reasons cats avoid bowls: water that goes stale within hours, and a bowl position where the cat cannot watch the room with its head down. Moving, filtered water in a wide, open vessel gets used more.
The three flow settings are the actual feature
The Flower Fountain ships with three ways of delivering the same water, and which one your cat prefers is genuinely individual:
Cats that recoil from a bubbling fountain often drink happily from the calm setting. If your cat ignored a fountain in the past, the setting is the first thing to change, not the brand.
The 3 litre reservoir means fewer refills than a small fountain, which matters mainly because a pump running dry is the fastest way to kill a fountain.
Cleaning is what decides whether you keep it
Every fountain story that ends badly ends with cleaning, and this model's own listed weakness is that the plastic stains and the pump needs attention.
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Every 2–3 days | Top up. Never let the reservoir run low enough to expose the pump |
| Weekly | Full strip-down: bowl, flower top, reservoir, hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly |
| Weekly | Pull the pump apart and clean the impeller — the step people skip |
| Every 2–4 weeks | Replace the triple-action filter, sooner in hard water or a multi-cat house |
| Monthly | Descale with a vinegar soak and a very thorough rinse if you have hard water |
The pump impeller is the important one. Cat hair and biofilm wrap around the impeller shaft, the pump labours, and a fountain that was quiet starts buzzing. Almost every "the pump died in a few months" story is an impeller that was never cleaned.
Plastic, staining and chin acne
This is an all-plastic fountain, and that has one real consequence beyond appearance. Plastic scratches, and scratched plastic harbours biofilm, which is implicated in feline chin acne — the blackhead-like spots some cats develop on the chin from contact with a contaminated bowl surface.
If your cat has ever had chin acne, a stainless steel or ceramic drinking surface is the better choice and it is worth paying for. If not, weekly washing and replacing the unit when the plastic is visibly scratched keeps this one hygienic.
Staining itself is cosmetic. Tea-coloured tinting from minerals in hard water is not harmful, though it is a sign you should be descaling more often.
The filter, and what it is for
The triple-action filter handles debris, and softens water by reducing magnesium and calcium. That second part is a genuine benefit in a hard-water area, because limescale is what kills fountain pumps.
Using filtered or previously boiled and cooled water in the reservoir does more for pump life than any filter cartridge, and costs nothing if you already have a kitchen filter jug.
Introducing it properly
Leave the existing water bowl in place. Put the fountain down alongside it, unplugged, for a day or two, then run it on the quietest setting. Some cats take a fortnight.
Placement matters as much as the fountain: keep it well away from the food bowl and away from the litter box. Many cats will not drink beside where they eat, and no cat should be asked to drink beside where it toilets. A fountain ignored for weeks is very often a fountain in the wrong room.
Who should look elsewhere
If your cat has had chin acne, choose stainless steel or ceramic. If you want the least maintenance possible, a fountain with fewer parts is easier to strip down weekly. And if your cat eats mostly wet food and drinks normally from a bowl, a wide ceramic bowl refreshed twice daily is a perfectly good answer that needs no pump at all.
Catit Flower Cat Water Fountain: Common Questions
Which flow setting should I use?
Start with the quietest surface-flow setting, especially with a cautious cat, and try the bubbling flower top later. Cats that refused a fountain in the past often accept a calm one — with this model the setting is the first thing to change, not the brand.
How often do I clean a cat fountain?
Strip and wash it weekly, and clean the pump impeller at the same time. That last step is the one people skip and the reason fountains get loud and fail. Replace the filter every two to four weeks, sooner in hard water or a multi-cat house.
Will the plastic stain?
It can tint over time, particularly in hard-water areas. That is cosmetic rather than harmful, but it is a sign to descale more often with a vinegar soak and a very thorough rinse.
Can a plastic fountain cause chin acne?
Scratched plastic harbours biofilm, which is implicated in feline chin acne. If your cat has had chin acne, a stainless steel or ceramic drinking surface is the better choice. Otherwise, weekly washing and replacing the unit once the plastic is visibly scratched keeps it hygienic.
Where should I put the fountain?
Away from the food bowl and well away from the litter box. Many cats will not drink beside where they eat, and none should be asked to drink beside where they toilet. A fountain being ignored is often a placement problem rather than a cat problem.
