Five gallons is a real constraint, and it decides everything

The Spec V is a 5 US gallon (roughly 19 litre) all-in-one. That volume is the single most important fact about it, because water volume is stability: the smaller the tank, the faster temperature swings, the faster ammonia accumulates, and the less margin you have when something goes wrong.

This is not an argument against small tanks. It is an argument for stocking one honestly. A 5 gallon done well is a beautiful thing and a 5 gallon stocked like a 20 is a fish-killing machine.

What actually fits in it

The betta recommendation is the honest one. This tank's proportions, filtration and light are close to ideal for a single betta with plants.

The filtration is better than it looks

The Spec V hides a three-stage filter in a rear compartment: a foam block, activated carbon, and a biological stage, fed by a small pump. Hiding the equipment is why the tank looks the way it does, and the design works.

Two practical points that matter more than the specification:

The light is good and unadjustable

The LED is genuinely bright for a nano tank — bright enough to grow low and medium-light plants like anubias, java fern, cryptocoryne and some stems, which is unusual in a kit light.

It has no dimmer and no built-in timer. That matters because too much light plus a new tank equals algae, reliably. Put the light on a cheap mechanical or smart plug timer and run around six to eight hours a day to start, extending only if plants want it. Running a bright nano light for twelve hours because it looks nice is the most common cause of the green-glass phase.

Heating is not included

Bettas are tropical and need stable warmth, typically around 25–27 °C. The Spec V does not ship with a heater, and the rear chamber is where a small adjustable heater goes. Buy an adjustable one with a thermostat rather than a fixed "preset" heater — preset heaters in tanks this small are a common cause of overheating, because a small volume responds fast to a heater that will not turn off.

Add a thermometer you can actually read. In 5 gallons, temperature is the parameter most likely to hurt you.

Cycling a nano tank

Do not add a fish on day one. A fishless cycle — dosing ammonia and testing until ammonia and nitrite both read zero and nitrate appears — takes a few weeks and is the difference between a healthy tank and a sick fish. In 5 gallons the margin for error is small enough that skipping it usually shows.

If you have already added a fish, switch to smaller, more frequent water changes and test daily until the readings settle.

Who should look elsewhere

If you want a school of fish, buy a longer tank — footprint matters more than volume for schooling species. If this is a child's first tank and you want the lowest possible failure rate, a 10 gallon is genuinely more forgiving. And if you want a planted showpiece with high-light carpeting plants, you will need a light with more control than this one offers.
