How the three major dog DNA kits compare on accuracy, breed detection, and health screening — and which one is genuinely worth buying in 2026.
You swab the inside of your dog's cheek, mail the sample to a lab, and receive results in 2-4 weeks. The lab compares your dog's DNA against a reference database of known breeds. More breeds in the database = more accurate results.

Embark is developed in partnership with Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine and uses over 200,000 genetic markers — more than any competitor. The results are the most detailed and accurate we've seen.
Breed results: Embark identified breeds down to 5% representation. For our known-breed control dog (purebred Lab), Embark correctly identified 100% Labrador Retriever. For our mixed breeds, the results were consistently more specific than competitors.
Tiers: Essential and Premium, with Premium adding health screening at a higher cost.

Wisdom Panel has been in the dog DNA business longest and has the largest database of tested dogs (3+ million). Their breed identification is nearly as accurate as Embark, with slightly less granularity at low percentage levels.
Breed results: Wisdom Panel correctly identified our purebred Lab and gave reasonable breed breakdowns for mixed dogs. Where it fell slightly short: it sometimes grouped small percentages into "breed groups" rather than specific breeds.
Where it sits: the cheapest of the three kits.

We included DNA My Dog because its low price is tempting. Unfortunately, the results were disappointing.
Breed results: For our purebred Lab, DNA My Dog identified Labrador Retriever as the primary breed but also included "Level 2" percentages of breeds that made no sense (Bulldog, Shih Tzu). For mixed breeds, the results varied significantly from both Embark and Wisdom Panel, with less-specific breed identification.

Breed information: Understanding your dog's breed mix helps you anticipate exercise needs, behavioral tendencies, and breed-specific health risks. A dog with 30% Border Collie will likely need more mental stimulation than average.
Health results: Share genetic health results with your veterinarian. Some findings (like MDR1 sensitivity) require immediate changes to your dog's care. Others (like hip dysplasia risk) inform long-term prevention strategies.
What NOT to do: Don't use DNA results to predict behavior problems or justify breed-specific restrictions. Genetics influence tendencies, but training and environment matter far more.
Embark is the clear winner for accuracy and health screening depth. Wisdom Panel Essential is a solid budget alternative with good breed identification. Avoid DNA My Dog — the savings aren't worth the inaccuracy. If you can stretch to Embark's Breed + Health tier, the health screening information alone could save your dog's life.
